Purpose:
The Developer tab in Microsoft Word provides access to advanced features such as macros, form controls, and add-ins. By default, this tab is hidden and must be enabled manually.
How to Fix:
Instructions (Windows)
- Open Microsoft Word
- Click File
- Select Options
- Click Customize Ribbon
- Under “Main Tabs,” check Developer
- Click OK
The Developer tab will now appear in the ribbon.
Instructions (Mac)
- Open Microsoft Word
- Click Word in the top menu
- Select Preferences
- Click Ribbon & Toolbar
- Under “Customize the Ribbon,” check Developer
- Click Save
The Developer tab will now appear in the ribbon.

- Controls: Insert checkboxes, dropdown lists, and text fields
- Visual Basic (VBA): Access the code editor
- Add-ins: Manage integrations and extensions
- Document Protection: Create and restrict editable forms
Notes
- The Developer tab is disabled by default for all users
- Changes apply only to the current application profile
- Restarting Word may be required if the tab does not appear
